Do Android Apps Really Make Millions?

Beautiful widgets made its creator $7,308,000 during its stay on the Android market, and is still going strong. It was one of the most downloaded apps in the last year. According to an estimate after paying Google its share, Level Up Studio was left with a little more than 7 million US dollars, from the sales of its top selling app, Beautiful Widgets.

Want to make it big in the Android Market? And you are wondering if Android apps really make that much? Has anybody ever made million dollars off his/her Android application?

A mobile game, or a weather widget, which takes approximately 2 months to create, can earn you 3 million dollars in the next five months. Believe it or not, this has been true for some of the success stories of Android Market.

Two most downloaded paid applications on Android market at the time of writing this article are ‘Where is My Water?’ and Beautiful widgets.

Where is my water?

This game made 396000 US dollars during its stay on the Android market. A calculation based on the numbers/estimates provided by Google on the Android market page for the ‘Where is my water’ looks something like this:

Where is my water sales (number of installs):  400,000

Price per install: $0.99

Total revenue: 0.99 * 400000= $396000

Google’s share: 396000 * 0.3 = $118800

Developer’s earnings: ($396000 – $118800) =  $277200

Beautiful widgets

Best example of estimated earnings of top Android applications, would be Beautiful widgets. A rough estimate of the earnings of this app, whilst its stay on the Android market appears to blow our minds:

Total Installs: 4,000,000

Price per install: $2.61

Total revenue earned: 2.61 * 4,000,000= $10,440,000

Google’s share: $3,132,000 ($10,440,000 * 0.3)

Developers take: ($10,440,000 – $3,132,000) $7,308,000

So after giving our calculations the margin of error, you can safely assume that a well reputed Android application on the Android market makes a million dollars, easy.

This is totally false, beautiful Widgets has just sold one million, and the first half million was at the 0.99 price, and they sold 300k at 10 cents during the 10B promo by google

The intention of this article was to show the potential of popular Android apps. The figures were loosely based on Google’s estimates, and some simple number crunching.
