In a recent report by the research company Localytics has made it clear that how many people have updated to iOS 5 ever since it was released. According to the report, 1 in every 3 devices has installed iOS 5. This is a large percentage, especially when you look at numbers concerning operating systems such as Android.
Localytics analyzes usage of software by embedding their code in the desired application. After collecting the usage and download data, and by putting the resulting data into different metrics they get the relevant information and provide it to their client. This way an application manufacturer can have a full report on the usage of its application, in various type of users, usage patterns, usage durations and so on.
Report On iOS 5
In their recent report they have shared a study on adoption rate of iOS 5. According to their report the iOS 5 has spread very quickly. Only after a couple of weeks, one third of the potential users of iOS 5 have it on their devices. By ‘potential users’ we mean those people who have devices capable of installing iOS 5. So among compatible device owners, 33% have iOS 5. This is a huge number, considering its not been long since iOS 5 was released.
Eliminating The Extreme Value
As we know iPhone 4S comes built in with iOS 5. So this can produce dissonance in the results. Surprisingly, not so much, when they removed iPhone 4S from the chart, the percentage of active iOS 5 users dropped to 31%. This result shows a very fast adoption rate. This means one week from the launch, one third of the compatible devices have already shifted to the latest operating system.
Here is a graph of the adoption rate of every iOS 5 compatible Apple device:
Vs Android
This percentage is staggering high and it becomes even more impressive if we look at its counter parts, Android. According the research data by Localytics, Android had much slower adoption and updation rate for the latest version of operating system. Since Android and iOS are direct competitors, this shows a very clear picture of the kind of following iOS 5 has. Only 40% of the Android devices are running the latest version of their software, Gingerbread and Honeycomb. This is quite low, if you consider the time it has passed since these version were released.
The Research Work
According to Localytics they took a substantially large sample size to ensure the result were representative of the market. They data were obtained by monitoring millions of iOS devices through the applications in them. You can read their official report here.
